Did you know that long-held yin style backbends in combination with clary sage essential oil will nourish your kidneys, your kidney meridians, and your kidney energy? Why does this information matter, you may ask? Sarah Powers explains in her book 'Insight Yoga' that the kidneys' energetic health "rules the general health of the lower back, the reproductive organs, the urinary system, the lower intestinal tract, and all the fluid systems of the body, including the joint lubrication."

According to Chinese Medicine, it is the kidneys that store our vital energy and we must be diligent when nourishing our kidneys as they contribute to the overall health of all the other organs.

If you notice that the main feeling tone in your life is that of angst and worry, or if you notice that you are often physically, emotionally, mentally overheating, start to practice long-held yin style backbends often. It is the kidney energy that gets most congested in the lower lumbar spine.

Using long held yin style backbends to purposefully apply moderate stress to the the deep connective tissues of the low back contributes to the increased energetic circulation throughout the entire body. When practicing yin style backbends like sphinx and seal, it is crucial to enjoy time in a neutral shapes between the poses so that you can deeply feel the flush of energy throughout your revitalized body.

My favourite neutral shape when practicing deep yin backbends is to simply lay on my belly. Taking the time to pressurize the tissues in your low back via long-held yin backbends will leave you with an inner body environment that feels at ease, calm, and peaceful.

Clary Sage essential oil is the best oil to pair with yin style backbends. Please note that Clary Sage should be used with caution by people who are pregnant, should not be used by babies and children, and avoided during and after the consumption of alcohol.

Clary Sage is a powerful essential oil that's steamed distilled from the flowering part of the mint plant. Historically, Clary Sage has been used for many things including kidney disorders. Today, people are using Clary Sage to support the body's hormonal and detoxification systems by promoting feelings of ease. In order to have Clary Sage work for you, all you have to do is apply a couple drops, diluted in a tablespoon of fractionated coconut oil, to the bottoms of your feet.
